A Dress Down Day held in the PPSD administrative offices on Friday, December 19 raised $175 and collected 15 donated ties for middle school boys who are members of the Gilbert Stuart Gentlemen Association.
The association, created almost five years ago, is a student leadership group at Gilbert Stuart Middle School that works to develop 6th-8th graders academically and socially. The group holds weekly mandatory study halls and biweekly Saturday school. The group also engages in community service and students visit local and regional colleges in the early fall and spring. The funds raised through Dress Down Day will be used to sponsor a college shadow day at the University of Rhode Island in February in conjunction with Brothers On a New Direction.
The club was created by former Gilbert Stuart teacher Rich Norris, who continues to donate his time and funds to the organization. He is now a guidance counselor at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School.
