Celebrating the cultures of the world’s continents brought the Hope High School community together for a fun evening on May 6 as the school held its 3rd Annual Multicultural Festival featuring the foods, music and dances of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Themed “We are Family,” the event was coordinated by PTO Chair Jeanmarie Schirling for the third consecutive year, the Foreign Language Department and teachers at Hope High School, and Inspiring Minds. An enthusiastic group of approximately 375 teachers and students attended the celebration.
Schirling, whose son is graduating from Hope this year, said the multicultural festival is her legacy to the school. “We have such a diverse population and I wanted everyone to come together as a community and family,” she said. “We have incredible teachers and students and we enjoyed each other’s culture and food.”
Performances included a jazz rendition by music teacher Brendan Caprio’s band, folk dances from the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Laos, Africa and American hip-hop.
Italian poetry was recited along with vocal performances by students and spirited African drumming led by math teacher Bisi Kolawole.
Displays of each country were made by the foreign language classes and the school’s Art Department. Students brought in food for a buffet dinner with dishes representing Chinese, Middle Eastern, African, Cape Verdean, Dominican and American cuisine.
After the performances concluded, the celebration continued as a large group of students gathered to dance to the event’s theme song, “We Are Family.”
