Keyton Brown exults in winning the gold medal for Industrial Motors and Controls.

For the first time in the chapter’s development, the PCTA SkillsUSA team became the state’s top medal winner at the 39th Annual Rhode Island SkillsUSA Awards Ceremony. PCTA won 36 overall medals, 14 of which were gold. The gold medal winners will represent their school and state from June 22-27 at the national SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, Ky.

Tenth grade pre-engineering students at Providence Career and Technical Academy join city and school officials in accepting a $20,000 grant for the program from Verizon.

Providence Career and Technical Academy’s (PCTA) pre-engineering program was presented with the Verizon Innovate Award, a $20,000 grant intended to support the program by bolstering its partnership with the University of Rhode Island, providing students with a broader range of materials, supporting visits to manufacturing sites, and connecting the class with guest speakers.

It was a race against time and each other as nearly 50 pre-engineering students from three Providence high schools attempted to rescue passengers from a burning boat, capture a drug runner and clean up an oil spill, all within a few seconds. Adding to the tension is the fact that they were being closely watched by their teachers, competitors, several engineers from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the local Civil Engineering Unit (CEU) in Warwick, including the CEU commanding officer.

For several weeks this past winter, carpentry students at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, were involved in a unique, high-profile project. After being approached by the Rhode Island Builders Association (RIBA), teachers Patrick Bowen and Ronald Carreiro seized the opportunity to instruct their students in building a model showcase home for the Rhode Island Home Show. The home was a centerpiece of the event, held at the Rhode Island Convention Center from March 5-8, and was used to display Cabot House furniture.
