Providence Schools wins award for environmental initiatives

Providence Schools is honored to be the recipient of a Gold Award from the State Electronics Challenge for our work in green procurement, energy and paper conservation, and responsible recycling of electronic office equipment in 2015!

As a result of these environmental initiatives, in 2015 Providence Schools saved enough energy to power 1,229 households per year, avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 2,082 cars from the road per year, avoided the generation of trash equivalent to 30 households/year, as well as avoiding the generation of more than 11 tons of hazardous waste – equivalent to the weight of 83 refrigerators.

“The Providence School Department is a truly outstanding example of a commitment to environmental leadership,” commented Lynn Rubinstein, State Electronics Challenge Program Manager. “This is the sixth time in eight years that the City has earned a Gold Award, and the School Department is one of only 12 organizations nationally being recognized this year and the only one in Rhode Island.”

El objetivo del programa “Child Outreach” (Alcanzando a los Niños) de las Escuelas Públicas de Providence es evaluar anualmente a los niños de tres, cuatro y cinco años de edad. Child Outreach Screening

The Providence Public School’s Child Outreach program goal is to screen every three, four and five year old annually. The screening looks at five areas: hearing, vision, speech, development and social emotional. The screening is designed to find children who maybe in need of specialized instruction prior to entering kindergarten.

ABRIL- MAYO ES PARCC ESTACIÓN DE EVALUACIÓN

Atención padres. El periodo de evaluaciones PARCC se llevará a cabo del 11 de abril a finales del mes de mayo.

Lo más importante que usted puede hacer por su hijo(a) es asegurarse que asista a la escuela en los días de prueba. El reponer una prueba por no haberla tomado a tiempo significa perder tiempo del salón de clases el cual no se puede recuperar. Además de la asistencia, los niños tendrán un mejor rendimiento si:

1. Se les anima a tomar la prueba seriamente y a brindar su mejor esfuerzo.

2. Se duermen temprano la noche anterior para estar bien descansados en el día de la prueba.

3. Toman un buen desayuno en la mañana de la evaluación.

4. Llegan a la escuela puntual para poder relajarse y concentrarse en la tarea que les espera.

Esta prueba es importante para su hijo(a), su escuela, y el Distrito de las Escuelas Públicas de Providence. ¡Hagamos todo lo que esté en nuestras manos para ayudar a nuestros niños a tener éxito y sentirse orgullosos de sí mismos por su buen desempeño!

April-May is PARCC assessment season

Attention parents. PARCC assessment season is beginning on April 11th and will run through the end of May.
The most important thing that you can do during testing is make sure that your child comes to school on the days they have testing.  Making up a missed test means time out of the classroom and losing important learning time that cannot be made up.  In addition to attendance, children will do their best on the tests if they:

• Are encouraged to take the tests seriously and to give their very best effort.
• Get a good night’s sleep to be well-rested on the day of the test.
• Try to have a good breakfast on the morning of the test.
• Arrive at school on time so that they can relax and focus on the task ahead.

This testing is important for your child, your school, and the Providence Public School District.  Let’s do everything in our power to help our children succeed and feel successful about themselves for a job well done!!

PPSD BUSCA NOMINACIONES PARA EL MAESTRO(A) DEL AÑO

¡Ha llegado este momento una vez más! PPSD busca nominaciones  para el  reconocimiento del  Maestro(a) del Año 2016,  ¡y necesitamos de su ayuda! Le pedimos a miembros de la comunidad nominar  a un destacado maestro(a) de entre las escuelas públicas de Providence- un maestro puede ser nominado por otro maestro, administrador, colega, estudiante, padre o miembro de la comunidad con conocimiento de las habilidades profesionales y compromiso a la enseñanza del nominado.

Lo nominados deben poseer las siguientes características:

• Excelente dominio de los conceptos en su materia.
• Excelente manejo o dominio al impartir la instrucción.
• Tener la capacidad de inspirar a estudiantes de todos los orígenes con diferentes capacidades de aprendizaje.
• Tener el respeto de sus estudiantes, padres, compañeros(as) y colegas.
• Participación activa en la comunidad.
• Conocer de temas educativos estatales y nacionales.
• Ser un modelo a sus colegas de enseñanza en las Escuelas Públicas de Providence.
• Tener, por lo menos, cinco años de experiencia educativa.

Cómo nominar a un maestro:

• Escriba una carta o un correo electrónico al comité de selección. Describa por qué su candidato merece ser Maestro(a) del Año y  por qué cumple con todos los criterios antes mencionados. Se pueden enviar las cartas en cualquier idioma. Las nominaciones se recibirán hasta el 11 de marzo, 2016.  Envíe sus cartas a  Doris De Los Santos, Directora Ejecutiva de Desarrollo y Sociedades, a la oficina del distrito, 797 Westminster Street, Providence RI 02903 o mande un correo electrónico a Doris.delossantos@ppsd.org, incluyendo “Maestro(a) del Año 2016” en el título.

PPSD Seeking Nominations for Teacher of the Year

It’s that time of year again! PPSD is seeking nominations for the 2016 Teacher of the Year award and we need your help! We ask members of the community to nominate an outstanding Providence public school teacher. A teacher may be nominated by anyone in the community – a fellow teacher, administrator, colleague, student, parent or community member with knowledge of the nominee’s professional skill and commitment.

Nominees must posses the following qualities:

• Be knowledgeable in their content area.
• Be a master at instructional delivery.
• Be able to demonstrate the ability to inspire students from all backgrounds with multiple learning abilities.
• Be respected by their students, parents, peers and colleagues.
• Be active in the community.
• Be articulate in state and national educational issues.
• Be a model representative of their teaching colleagues in the Providence Public Schools.
• Have at least five years of teaching experience.

 How to Nominate a Teacher:

• Write a letter or email to the selection committee describing why your candidate deserves to be the Teacher of the Year and describe how your nominee demonstrates the characteristics listed above. Letters in any language of the nominator’s choosing are welcome.
• All nominations must be received by March 11, 2016. Letters should be addressed to Doris De Los Santos, Executive Director of Development, Partnerships & Engagement, 797 Westminster Street, Providence, RI 02903. Emails should be sent to Doris at Doris.delossantos@ppsd.org, with “Teacher of the Year 2016” in the subject line.
